Landing page of the CCR website created in Figma

Background

As a designer at Eau de Web, I was responsible with the website's UI redesign and to conduct UX research in order to align the project with the client's goal of being perceived as a serious government authority. The client provided initial wireframes that served as a rough first draft for the main pages.

Objective

The main focus for this project was to create a minimalist website design that builds trust with end users, while staying aligned with the existing visual identity, such as the brands' colors and logo.

Approach

Reviewing the existing website, I discovered some usability problems:

  • Inconsistent page hierarchy
  • The hero displayed a search bar with no information on what the website is
  • The navigation didn't link to sections a first time user would expect, for example Reports by type or an introduction page about the organization's activity
  • Call-to-action buttons to download a publication without knowing the file type or the exact contents of the document
  • Content was too cramped in boxes, with kerning being too small
  • Typography and color contrast reduced readability

Original website before redesign

Together with the client, I updated the navigation into a new site map to better reflect the user journey. I proposed new colors and shades to improve accessibility; I used the Contrast plugin in Figma to confirm readability according to guidelines. Inter was selected as the font because it enhances clarity, offers good spacing and supports a scannable layout which is ideal for an audit website.

On the landing page, the content was organized into 3 main sections for the recent news, reports and curated news/events. These display visuals, short descriptions and direct links to encourage further exploration. The news content appears twice on the page because it is the client's top priority. The hero highlights recently updated news, while the last section presents a curated collection of news and events.

The hero section was redesigned to provide a brief introduction to the authority and a link to read more. Website search was not a key priority for the client, and therefore it was displayed in a minimal form and kept above the navigation.

The design system

For this project a design system was necessary to maintain visual choices consistent and keep ongoing maintenance easier, most importantly when incorporating feedback from client.

The redesign was successful, delivering a stronger visual direction, a more structured and clearer content hierarchy, more imagery, along with improved text sizing and typography for better readability.
