Background

Launched in 2011, The InforMEA platform provides easy access to information on MEAs, treaty texts and provisions. Another feature of the platform is the eLearning section that provides free access to a collection of 28 online courses that can be taken by anyone.

As a designer at Eau de Web, I was responsible with the redesign and UX research of the course detail pages for the InforMEA eLearning platform. The final deliverable needed to maintain visual consistency with the InforMEA Platform and other UN platforms. Although design consistency and visual similarity were key, I had enough flexibility to introduce new components and colors where appropriate.

Objective

The objective for this project was improving the overall user experience by structuring and presenting content clearly, while sticking to the InforMEA website look. According to the project brief, common users of the website are students/adults who want to find a course, get a brief idea of what it covers and whether it matches their goals. Therefore a clear structure would strongly benefit them.

Approach

After reviewing the website, I discovered some usability problems:

  • Course page information was displayed inconsistently; content was structured differently on each page, not knowing what to expect
  • Requirements for completing a course were unclear and were only sometimes specified
  • Course progress was not easily visible, which would hinder users from knowing how far ahead they are
  • Accessibility issues: missing headings, bright/flashy text colors used to emphasize information, small typography
  • Static graphics and/or GIFs were used to draw attention to links and content sections, which made the platform look unprofessional

Visual consistency with the InforMEA platform was maintained by using blue as the primary accent color, which maintains brand continuity, and white/gray background variations to visually separate content areas and improve scannability.

The design system

For this project a design system was essential in maintaining consistent visual choices consistent and simplifying ongoing maintenance, particularly when incorporating client feedback.
